Tue, 08 May 2012 09:42:00 -0700 The answer is not just "no", but "Hell no!" http://wyblog.posterous.com/the-answer-is-not-just-no-but-hell-no http://wyblog.posterous.com/the-answer-is-not-just-no-but-hell-no

In a new biography, Obama asks: Am I an American?

Former Washington Post reporter David Maraniss has penned a new biography of Barack Obama, The Early Years. Excerpts were recently published in Vanity Fair.

The excerpt focuses on Obama's brief time in New York after his graduation from Columbia University. The son of a Kenyan father and an American expatriate mother, Obama emerges as a man questioning whether he viewed himself, or wanted to be viewed by others, as an American. Not in a citizenship sense -- Obama was born in the United States and that was that -- but in the sense of how he saw the world and wanted to be seen by it.

Obama had a lot of Pakistani friends; Maraniss writes that if Obama and his girlfriend socialized as a couple, "it was almost always with the Pakistanis." Obama appeared to identify with his friends as fellow non-Americans. "For years when Barack was around them, he seemed to share their attitudes as sophisticated outsiders who looked at politics from an international perspective," Maraniss writes. "He was one of them, in that sense."

And yet, he chose not to become president of Pock-ee-stahn?

But Obama was ambitious. Appalled by the "dirty deeds" of "Reagan and his minions" (as he wrote in "Dreams from My Father"), Obama became increasingly interested in, as Maraniss writes, "gaining power in order to change things." He couldn't do that as an international guy hanging around with his Pakistani friends; he needed to become an American.

Which he then did, carefully and deliberately. In public.

In private of course, he still views himself as the aloof international outsider, determined to prove his inherent superiority.

Thu, 03 May 2012 06:10:00 -0700 At long last, NJ residents can buy wine online http://wyblog.posterous.com/at-long-last-nj-residents-can-buy-wine-online http://wyblog.posterous.com/at-long-last-nj-residents-can-buy-wine-online

A new law took effect on Tuesday which grants us a right already enjoyed by people in 38 other states. The right to have wine shipped directly to our homes or offices.

Before the law went into effect, neither New Jersey nor out-of-state wineries could ship their bottles directly to customers here unless they did it through a wholesale distributor. The new law cuts out the middle man, allowing wineries to earn more profit per bottle by selling them directly to customers at retail prices.

Is there a catch? Of course there's a catch.

It also made available a permit for out-of-state wineries to sell to New Jersey customers. The state’s Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control has gotten calls from interested sellers, said spokesman Zach Hosseini, but no one has filed an application yet.

The Tax Man's still gotta get his vig.

And we aren't free to buy as much as we want, just like with guns, there's a one-case-a-month limit.

There’s also a 12-case, or 144-bottle, limit on shipments residents can receive per year.

Because the nanny-staters know what's best for us.

Remember when Mitt Romney put his dog on the roof of his car? Democrats called PETA. Obama said "don't do that, it ruins the flavor."

See, long ago in Indonesia, when he was but a wee Muslim lad without a fake birth certificate, Barack Obama ate dog meat. Someone finally read that passage in "Dreams From My Father." And thus an internet meme was born.

What does Obama call Mitt Romney's dog Seamus? Meals on Wheels!

Fri, 06 Apr 2012 17:45:00 -0700 They're gonna need to print some new 4th grade science books http://wyblog.posterous.com/theyre-gonna-need-to-print-some-new-4th-grade http://wyblog.posterous.com/theyre-gonna-need-to-print-some-new-4th-grade

There's an entire chapter in Sophie's 4th grade science book devoted to lamenting the plight of the polar bears. They're. Gonna. Die! And of course it's all the fault of those evil corporations.

Except... The polar bears are fine. Thriving even. See, somebody took the time to do an actual scientific study. With charts. And graphs.

The debate about climate change and its impact on polar bears has intensified with the release of a survey that shows the bear population in a key part of northern Canada is far larger than many scientists thought, and might be growing.

The number of bears along the western shore of Hudson Bay, believed to be among the most threatened bear subpopulations, stands at 1,013 and could be even higher, according to the results of an aerial survey released Wednesday by the Government of Nunavut. That’s 66 per cent higher than estimates by other researchers who forecasted the numbers would fall to as low as 610 because of warming temperatures that melt ice faster and ruin bears’ ability to hunt. The Hudson Bay region, which straddles Nunavut and Manitoba, is critical because it’s considered a bellwether for how polar bears are doing elsewhere in the Arctic.

The conclusion?

The study shows that “the bear population is not in crisis as people believed,” said Drikus Gissing, Nunavut’s director of wildlife management. “There is no doom and gloom.”

Good news for the polar bears.

Bad news for the econut alarmists.

Tue, 03 Apr 2012 16:56:00 -0700 On the off chance the GOP picks Nikki Haley for VP the Ya-Ya Sisterhood stands ready to cut her off at the knees http://wyblog.posterous.com/on-the-off-chance-the-gop-picks-nikki-haley-f http://wyblog.posterous.com/on-the-off-chance-the-gop-picks-nikki-haley-f

Because digging for dirt on Republican women isn't sexist. Just ask My Favorite Feminist.

Who could be better as a Republican vice presidential pick than a young, attractive, up-and-coming rising star who happens to be a woman of color, a mom of young children and the governor of an important Southern state?  The GOP is sorely in need of repairing the damage it’s done to itself with the “woman’s vote” by finding a woman for the VP slot. That should have been South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, but she can’t and won’t be the one to help them out with that in 2012.

Gee, why not?

While she’s denied the rumors that continue to circulate about whether she’s had extramarital affairs, it doesn’t even matter if they’re true. Since it looks like the Republican presidential candidate will be either Mitt Romney or Rick Santorum — both men who wear their faithful family-man bona fides on their sleeves — there is no room in their campaigns for even the slightest chance of a marital scandal for a running mate.

Sheesh. Innuendo and rumors, and feminists are going to help spread them? Because the rumors don't matter! She's a Rethuglican! She deserves whatever she gets!

Oh, and she met Sarah Palin once. And HBO's hit-job mock-u-mentary was all true dontcha know. It fit the narrative to a T, and she really can see Russia from her house!

No matter how inspiring her personal story is, the shadow of Sarah Palin is a long one, and the McCain campaign’s inadequate vetting of Palin, combined with even the possibility of a skeleton in Haley’s closet, will keep her off the GOP ticket in 2012, and probably forever.

Damning with faint praise. Way to stand up for womankind.

There is no intellectual honesty in feminism.

Well whaddaya know, sanity from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

Spectra Energy cleared an environmental hurdle in its plan to build a $1.2 billion pipeline that would bring natural gas from New Jersey to Manhattan.

Building and operating the approximately 16-mile (26- kilometer) project would have a “less-than-significant” environmental impact with mitigation measures in place, staff of the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission said in a report issued today.

"Less-than significant" is of course bureaucrat-speak for "you'll never notice it." Because until Barry figures out how to turn algae and pixie dust into energy we'll need fossil fuels, and really, who's gonna wait around for him anyway?

Government buildings in Trenton, NJ are out of toilet paper. But the city council refuses to authorize purchasing more.

The city’s toilet paper crisis intensified yesterday, with supplies nearly gone and no sign they will be replenished soon. Officials now say the city could face state intervention if bathroom dispensers are left empty, and that action may involve building closures if health standards are not met.

The stocks have dwindled as the council quarreled with Mayor Tony Mack’s administration over a contract that would resupply the paper products for a year.

Paper towel and toilet paper dispensers in the city senior centers, police department, fire department, museum, water filtration plant and City Hall itself likely won’t last through the week.

Quick. Name the political party to which Mayor Mack and his city council all belong.

Maybe they're waiting for Obama to mandate that health insurers provide toilet paper for free.

Thu, 08 Mar 2012 12:00:00 -0800 Thanks Elizabeth Warren - Wells Fargo eliminates free checking in New Jersey http://wyblog.posterous.com/thanks-elizabeth-warren-wells-fargo-eliminate http://wyblog.posterous.com/thanks-elizabeth-warren-wells-fargo-eliminate

Before Elizabeth Warren was a candidate for U.S. Senate from Massachusetts or Godmother to #OccupyMomsBasement she begat the Dodd-Frank Consumer Financial Protection Board. Except it ought to be renamed the Moron Protection Board. Because that's what it essentially does. Protects morons. Morons who can't read their mortgage contracts. And morons who can't balance their checkbooks.

The latter group used to be a lucrative source of fee income to banks. Everytime some moron swiped his debit card for a $4.50 Starbucks latte with only 75 cents in his account, cha-ching!, he got hit with an overdraft fee.

Elizabeth Warren decided that was "unfair." Busy slackers can't be bogged down balancing their checking accounts! Those fees were unreasonable!

So guess what? Now everybody pays fees. Free checking has gone the way of the dodo bird. Wells Fargo is now charging everyone a $7 monthly fee. Even the "good" customers who never bounced a check or swiped their debit cards on insufficient funds.

Bank of America and Chase are expected to follow suit.

See, that's the essence of Socialism. Everyone shares the pain. Instead of the people who cause the problems paying the fees, now everyone pays. It fulfils the Obamunists' sense of egalitarianism. But it's only "fair" if you're a moron.
